Has anyone examined the Lucas ATD to find out how quickly it advances to full advance, and what would be ideal? I get the idea that it advances too rapidly, so what remedies? I am thinking of stronger springs, or lightening the bob weights. But test figures would be rather, um, useful

Lucas supplied a range of…
Lucas supplied a range of springs to modify the curve available, from this range the OEM picked one to suit the engine, so you can find springs out there to suit your old worn out ATD.

I don't think the advance rate of an unworn Lucas unit was wrong in any way. When we switched to a basic Boyer many years ago we noticed an immediate loss of mid range urge. The Lucas unit was prone to wear however. Would we have done anything different with hindsight?, No, the Boyer has been reliable and Mr Boyer gave good service. And there was not really any alternative .
