Hello,
I am looking for some information re my 500T ('54). I don't know if it's the same as other 500 singles of that year.
Could someone tell me the cam timing in degrees and secondly the points opening time in degrees or piston height or preferably both.
Lastly, tappet clearance, if there's supposed to be any.
It's difficult to find info on the model.
Thanks
Garry
Thanks for the book…
Thanks for the book recommendation and the valve clearance info Anthony. I'll keep my eye out for a copy.
Alan, really appreciate the data sheet, I'll print that off and put it with my 'stuff', really useful.
Thanks again
Garry

500T valve timing.
Hi Gary,
The valve timing for 500T, ES2 and Model 18 are all the same and are..... exhaust opens 70 degrees before bottom dead centre ( BBDC ) closes 30 after top dead centre ( ATDC ). Inlet opens 30 BTDC, closes 70 ABDC. This gives a good all-round performance but if you want an engine that is more tractable at low revs you can reduce the over-lap from 60 degrees to 50 by changing the timing to 75/25 25/75 although this will reduce power at the top end. To get these figures you will probably need the earlier 3 slot half time pinion, and they will not be exactly spot-on.
The ignition timing listed at 5/8" BTDC equates to 45 degrees fully advanced, but this may need a slight adjustment to suit modern E10 petrol. Don't over-tighten the head bolts as the aluminium barrel will expand more than the cast iron one does, so 40 ft/lbs should be enough.

See if you can find the P.LGarratt Norton Motorcycles, book as this covers the 500T models. The 5th edition is from 1948 to 1962. It was published by C. Arthur Pearson Ltd, and you can find them at auto-jumbles. Garratt was the Norton service manager at Bracebridge Street. The tappet clearance according the the Garrett book, was NIL inlet and exhaust, with the push rods free to rotate.
