46 model 18 clutch stacking?

Forums

Gents,

Im currently in the process of purchasing new fibers and steels for my clutch and have a question? According to the parts manual, I need five steels I and five fibers. When looking at the picture of the parts it’s showing ( as I see it ) five fibers and six steels? Am I seeing this correct?

when I pulled mine apart, I had five steel plates and four fiber plates with tabs and one fiber that did not have tabs?

Can some one tell what is up with this and do need five fibers and five steels and the correct stacking order please…maybe this is why I could not get it to actuate and adjust correctly?

Thanks much.

Nate.

It's possible to mix and match parts from the first 1930s Norton clutch through until the last Featherbed-fitment AMC item in 1970.

First you need to establish what you have. Do you have the original basket with inserts ? If so then the first plate will be plain steel. Many pattern friction plates are thicker so a reduction is needed. Manxes that ran dry had a different stack and the inner and outer tabs changed at some point too.

It might not be a bad idea to post photos of your components.

Hi Rich,

I have the original basket with the cork inserts. I have three steels that are 1.60mm thick and one 1.45 and a 1.33…assuming just worn on some but who knows? That plates are knackered up and pitted. I will try to post pics if I can. Thanks much.

The "postage stamp" inserts in the drum should be a woven Ferodo material...somebody has replaced them with cork and presumably thicker than original. The plate with no tags is not contributing to drive and can only be there to correct stack height.

I would expect five friction plates and six plain, with the plain plates going in first and last. You may have to do something about the thickness of the inserts in the drum though.

Thanks Rich. The corks look thinner than what the parts on-line show but will look into this. I will also order six/plates and go from there.

Thanks again.

Nate.
