36' 16H Service Sundries

Forums

Hi again,

Ok, I am collecting my 16H today which will be my first ever classic (not slept a wink!!) However as I'm new to all this, please could someone advise me on where to buy the usual item so I can service the machine before riding her? E.g. What grade engine/gearbox oil, where from? Where can I purchase new brake pads, ifrequired? Your assistance would be most welcome here, many thanks in anticipation!

I use straight 30 oil in engineand 90 gear oil in gearbox. Use a top quality oil. I change it at the start of the season every year. (not gear oil). I always check the oil is returning to tank before setting off, this can be done by looking in the oil tank you will see the oil pumping back into the tank via a 1/4inch pipe. If it isnt there is a problem. Brake shoes and parts there are a number of dealers to use if you get Old bike mart etc you will get all the dealers.

Norton Owners Club may have some parts and worth an email to parts secretary

Good luck, A word of warning, this is a rather bad disease with no known cure, I started with a Dommi now thereare 6 bikes (3 nortons)plus one on its way. BE WARNED

Hi Laurence,

In addition to the above you will also need a set of Whitworth spanners.

If you are on a tight budget start with a set of open-end spanners, from 1/8 to 1/2 inch. This range is covered by 6 spanners and you get 2 of each size except for the smallest and largest. You can add sockets or combination ring spanners later.

Robert/Michael/Ian,

Many thanks for all your assistance here guys, I've ordered copies of the manuals from Brucemain's website last night, brilliant!!!!

I already have a set of imperial sized spanners which I'm guessing are whatare called Whitworth?

However what about the fuel? Do I need to add an additive to the unleaded petrol to avoid burning the valve seats long term? I've heared some people saying no and others yes??

If Ido, thereseems to be a vast array of different types of additives out there, and I was wondering if there is anything specific that's suited to old bikes or are they all pretty much suitable?

Thanks again!

Hi Laurence,

Your imperial spanners may not be Whitworth.

Imperial spanners aremeasured AF (across flats) ie the size quoted is the distance between the jaws, as with metric spanners.

Whitworthspanners are sized in relation to the bolt diameter. They will be marked W or BSW.If your current spanners have either mark then they will be OK. If not then you are looking for a new set.

There is quite a learning curve with these machines!

Cheers
