3 speed Sturmey Archer Lubrication

Forums

Hi

I spent the weekend machining a new end cover for the 3 speed SA box on my 1928 Norton CS1 and assembling the box. I'm happy with the end result but now need to decide what oil to use in it. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Andy

My first thought was Penrite Semi Fluid Grease ( use it in the Burman gearbox in the Comet ). This makes it leak less. Second thought was that an not shockproof 75W90 GL-5 gearbox oil ( have in the TTI box in the Manx) has about same viscosity as SAE50 motor oil. Then i read this: http://classicmotorcycleforum.com/index.php?topic=2952.0

Enough guessing without knowing, Hopefully you'll get a better answer from someone else.

I used semi fluid grease (Spheerol) in my 1931 Sunbeam Model 10 and it seemed to work very well.

Iâve just finished rebuilding my 29 CS1 box. Based on feedback from other CS1 users Iâm using semi fluid grease EP 00 and then the occasional top up when in use of EP 140.

Both can be bought from Vin and Vet and posted to you, or to save money they will bring them to the Stafford show for you to collect there.

Choice of gearbox oils has been discussed here before, maybe more for laydown boxes but as they all share a common heritage not so different. Just a reminder that EP oils are not recommended as the EP additives contain sulphur compounds which can corrode the bronze bushes. Non-EP gearbox oils are available from Morris (and other suppliers) in a range of viscosities, or you can stick with engine oil.

To get semifluid grease into the gearbox, I heat the greasebottle in almost boiling water. Flows fairly easy. Some say that cake decoration pipe bags work well, never tried it.

I used one of those big syringes that people use for brake bleeding etc. The grease had to be reasonably warm to flow well.

Just out of interest how much of the semi fluid grease do folk use?

The book says charge with 1/2lb and top up occasionally with another 1/4lb.

What would this equate to in modern terms, 500ml ??
