20W50 mineral engine oil

Forums

Having recently completeda strip down and cleanof my 1949 16H engine, I am now considering the use of a modern 20w50 mineral, detergent, dispersant type engine oil. I'm sure the question has been asked many times in the past, however could someone please put me straight on this matter. I do notintend on installing an additionalcatridge type oil fliter into the system, therefore would a standard 20w50 mineral oil of say an API SF/CC be suitable for this engine? any info would be much appreciated.

Regards,Karl.

Karl, I think that any oil thats thick enough will do.Youre not going to do a million miles or run at racing revs,so its not critical. A 50 mono oil will have less tendency to leak, and as it will be thicker when cold , take longer to wet sump. Modern oils are lightyears advanced over the oils of the fifties and sixties.Whens the last time you spent Sunday decoking your car cylinder head, because it wouldnt run without knocking, or had to chisel rock hard carbon off your piston, and free up the top ring because it was stuck in its groove?Thats why sidevalves were so popular, the head had to come off every 5000 miles or so.Regards John.

You can use either 15W50, 20W50 or 10W60 oils with confidence.

For reasons explained (I hope) in RH 285, I would go for the most modern specification available rather than those marketed as classic oils. The same marketers also sell the higher spec. products.
