The Norton 'Oilbath' chaincase doesn't leave a lot of room between the chain runs to ensure clearance on the back and front of everything. However, if the problem only occurs when the clutch is lifted and everything there is up tight then it suggests that a worn mainshaft thrust washer is allowing the whole assembly to displace.
If you can grasp the clutch (or mainshaft) and pull it in and out more than a fraction then you'll probably need to delve into the gearbox.
It is worth checking that you have the correct clutch. Anything made up using the later friction back-plate or alloy pressure plate will give clearance problems in a dynamo model chaincase.
