16H mudguards

Forums

Hi in the process of restoring a 1938 16h civilian model and in need of mudguards wondering if these are the same as the wd model and can they be puchased anywhere in the UK? Also I have seen them on ebay from India has anybody had any dealings with them? Would hate to buy them only to find they were of poor quality. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

The answer is 'probably not' but 'possibly'...WD parts would certainly fit.

There are at least three different WD rear guards and tailpieces. The early ones were identical to civilian.

For 1938, you need the 8817 rear guard with 8816 number plate bracket. This is the stronger bracket with the double-bolt fixing. A consequence of this is that the tailpiece lost its rib. The guard still had a rib which looks a little odd to be honest.

Earlier WD models, as per civilian production had the fully ribbed set up with single point fixing for the number plate.

Your problem using WD parts is likely to be that anyone making them will follow the mid-war unribbed pattern with shorter tailpiece (it was no longer intended for a number plate).

The front guard didn't change much, it retained the rib with the flare at the front. Later WD versions no longer had the dimples for the number plate fixings but these are fairly easiy added.

The biggest problem that I can see with the Indian tinware is that it is so inconsistent...it's not made on tooling and is as good as the worker who makes it...Most of the front guards that I've seen have been less than perfect. It depends what sort of standard you're working to and how handy you are at metal-bashing.

In addition to what Richard has said, for a front mudguard you could try Fred Williams. His details are available somewhere on here.

Best to phone him on an evening between 8 & 9 pm.
