16h Kickstart Shaft Oil Leak

Forums

Is it possible to cure the leaking kickstart shaft on my 1946 16h? A puddle appears under my gearbox within minutes.

I have looked at cutaway drawings and there doesn’t appear to be a seal.

I also understand that the outer cover on an upright gearbox can be removed without disturbing the gearbox?

... a cork washer (P/N A2/355) but these are usually pretty ineffective at this age. I think people have had the shaft machined for O or X rings.Yes, you can take the outer cover off but that won't give access to the seal.

Thank you Ian. Really frustrating as I’ve just had the gearbox mountings nicely repaired and got it all back together!

I think it will have to leak until next year at least as I want to get a little use out of the bike.

Just a thought, but would semi-fluid gearbox grease work and reduce the oil slick?

Both inner and outer covers can be removed with the gearbox in the bike, I fitted a couple of thin “o” rings to the existing grooves in the kickstart shaft which have stopped any leaks from that source.

I'm not sure how the '46 is, but on the doll's head, felt off-cuts under the kickstart spring cover can reduce things to  the odd drip.

Thanks Richard, yes I could do that to delay the inevitable; a good idea.
