'47 and '48 ES2 engine parts interchangeable?

Forums

So when I bought my '48 ES2 it came with a somewhat cannibalised "spare" engine (B4 13709).Anybody got a spares book for a '47? I'm interested in knowing if I can use some of the parts in my '48.

Are things like the barrel and piston interchangeable between these two years?

Have a look on www.brucemain-smith.com. He does a good selection of manuals and parts books. Given it is only a years gap between the two I would have thought most bits would be interchangeable.

Hi.

Try Paul Norman - http://www.racingvincent.co.uk/14%20Norton%20Site/Manx-Norton-01F.htmfor a 48 PDF parts book or RGM's. E-bay is probably your only chance for a 47 one.

A quick look through my own 48 copy shows most of the parts with 'C' (1948) pre-fixes including the barrel. I don't know how compatible they would be with a 47..

Roy Bacon (Norton Singles)lists the following changes for 48:

SV & OHV. smaller timing case, no cam followers, flat non-rotating tappets, dished cam gears, smaller but wider flywheels, longer piston, oil pump gear with pin-holes, magneto sprocket teeth number altered.

OHV. one-piece rocker box with spindles, oil supply from main return pipe, in-line silencer.

Hope this is of some help.

Regards.

Wow! Thanks for the info!

If the piston is longer in '48 I would think that you can't use one from '47 as a spare. Some of the fins are broken on my '48. I was hoping to switch in parts from the '47 to avoid the cost of having the fins repaired.

I guess I got some '47 parts to trade or sell...

Buenas tardes,

Lo ciento! I sold all of my 1947 parts a while ago to fund the restortion of my '48 ES2.

Happy hunting!

Hi Byron,

Thank you anyways. Good to know that british have interest to learn spanish. Only that it is not "lo ciento". Correct is "lo siento".

If anyone needs to write or understand something in spanish, don?t hesitate to ask me.

Regards,

Hans.
