Primary chaincase retaining nut

Forums

Hi Guys - I can't find the part number for the hollow threaded shaft onto which the primary chaincase retaining nut screws for a '54 ES2. I'm sure mine is cross-treaded resulting int he nut sitting crooked and not helping the oil tightness of the chaincase. I have the part lists for '50 and '55 but can't see it in either althoough the retaing nut is noted.

Any clues - and does the Club hold one or two?

Any help gratefully received.

From 1949 to 54 all my Model 7 parts books list this piece as combined with the left-hand engine plate. Possibly the same for the ES2. In the 1954 book it can be found on page 21 under Engine Plates......E12/516.

I made a substitute version using a length of 1" water pipe threaded at both ends to take standard bath tap shouldered nuts. See attachments for real item and alternative.

Thanks Phil; After a second look at the pics in the spares sbook I saw that it was an engine mounting plate with the tube attached, not a separate tube as I had imagined. I'll look at your pics althugh not sure how I can remove the exisitng tube form the engine plate. Clever idea. Well done!

Hello all,

As I also experienced in my Norton 18 1947 a worn footrests serrations, I turned in my lathe the whole support in three parts, as shown in the photograph, ready to be welded.

Thanks Hans.

O that I had a lathe!

O that I could weld!

Exellent piece you made there.

WOW! I'd love to get my hands on that. But lets not forget the other side as well!

Maybe you should go into business!

What would you charge to make one of these?

Thanks for that, MIke, but it wasn't me it was Hans. My point was that I don't have a lathe and I can't weld!

But you're right. THey are great.

Hi George,

I own among my british bikes, a Norton 50, 1959 and a Norton 18, 1947, each of different footrest arrangement. The 50 one, has two prongs at the engine end and is detachable, instead of the 18 one which is welded to the engine plate.

As in my 18 both footrest supports were badly worn, I carefully cut with a hacksaw the tube close to the engine plate and then grind the plate flat.

Attached a drawing of the footrests supports, having with the left hand a doubt: Where should the washer be placed? (distance from the engine plate). As my inner chaincase has some bents and the footrest support was early repaired, I can not assure if the measures are correct.

Eventually I could make the serrated part only with the dimensions shown.

Any suggestions, don?t hesitate to ask.
