1957 Model 50 rear shocks length

Forums

Hi all, still looking for a rear mudguard, chainguard, headlamp shell and the club centre stand I bough is totally wrong, only correct in width at the mounting points. I said what it was for...

Anyway, can anyone please advise the correct length of rear shocks please. Hagon say they can supply if they know the correct length

57 & 58 singles pre f/bed frame.

Happy New Year to all.

Very many thanks Robert,

It would appear the extended length is either 12.2" or 12 .6"

I know that the length is between the Wide and slim lines so one of these options have to be it. Anyone able to measure an original?

Many years ago, Norvil told me that the 57/58 singles used a Matchless frame but they didn't use long roadhoalders at the front so that may change things?

As soon as I have the right length I'll order a pair from Hagon.

Thanks again Robert, for narrowing it down to two lengths.

Happy New Year to all Norton fans and may we work together to keep more Norton's on the road.

This may be of intrest..................

When restoring my '57 model 77 with the rear swing arm& single down tube frame, I discovered that the correct shocks were made by Armstrong & look very different than the Girlings. After buying a pair online I then discovered they made them in 2 lengths, a short version for Royal Enfiled & a long version for Nortons & of course I had the wrong ones :)

I think Paul Gibbons tried a set of Hagons & they did not fit properly as I recall (on his Model 77).

Norton ones were 12 3/4" center to center & the Royal Enfield oes were 11 1/2" center to center as I recall.

I am about to start restoring a 1957 ES2 and the research that I have done would suggest that Norton went to Girling for the 1957 Singles, the shocks fitted to my ES2 measure approx. 12 3/4", theyhave exposed adjustment cams and are considerably thinner than the Armsrongs fitted to my 54/55 model 7.

Neil I looked for a long time for a centre stand and in the endgot a stand as fitted to swingarm 7 and ES2, then narrowed it to fit.

Hi Al,

I searched my books & they also say that Norton went to Girling for the 1957 Singles. It is also noted in THE NORTON SINGLES book by Bacon.

Thanks Alan a Skip, 12 3/4" of the Girling design is what I'll ask Hagon for. Brilliant.

Thanks also for the stand info, Alan, mine was the correct width but the crossbar was too high up. Still need to find a spring for that and the side stand.
