I have been racing a M40 Manx GP from 1939 during the last 4yrs on Belgium circuits and the bike needed lately some seriouis attention. Valve guides completely worn out, frame broken underneath the gearbox, foot rest lug broken-off, front brake (conical 8") needing replacement (unobtainable?) so I decided to entirely restore it and not expose it again to the harsh racing conditions anymore but just to take it to demonstrations (equipped with the proper short megaphone).
So I could find a 1948 ES2 modified to race trim, but with very limited engine preparation: example: the front brake was the STD ES2 7" drum (see picture) which I'm replacing by a gold star 8" model build in a 21" rim.
I fitted last summer a Manx piston which brings the engine capacity to 530cc with higher compression, which make a big difference in accelleration, but still the bike feels very heavy, the iron cylinder and head contributing to this.
Planning to have some work done on the head (larger inlet valves) I wonder whether I would not first find a replacement for those cast iron parts before engaging into this.
As I need to stay pre-1950 specification, I can put other parts as long as they were offered by the manufacturer in that periond.
But I do not know whether the ES2 was offered an aloy head before 1950? Can some-one advise me? (The 500T has a full alloy engine but -beside the fact that I couldn't find any for sale- will a 500T head and barrel fit on the ES2 crankcase?).
Most straight forward would be to fit a ES2 alloy head, at least if those were already offered before1950.
Would be great if someone could confirm this.

The 500T had an ally head and was produced from 1949, so you would be ok to use it

Many thanks for the feedba…
Many thanks for the feedback. Good news: I do not have to find an alloy ES2 head as it wont be eligible in vintage racing class. Bad news: where to find a 500T head ð?
Another good news: found a girder fork so that it will be much closer to pre-war s"pecs" for next racing season
Merry Christmas to all readers! Werner

As far as I know, the first 500Ts had iron barrels and heads. So, it may have been 1950 before the aluminium heads were available. I am not an authority on these bikes, this is just information I have picked up because I ride a 500T. It is probably worth contacting the club's technical officer, for pushrod singles, for a definitive answer. I have also heard that he may know a bit about tuning them!

Hi Werner, The production…
Hi Werner,
The production 500T was first shown in public at the 1948 Earls Court Motorcycle show. This allowed me to use one of these engines in UK vintage racing in the pre 1949 class. The original alloy heads were sand-cast with a spectacle shaped iron insert which provided the valve seats and spark plug threaded area. This was used with the Alfin alloy barrel and these items used a 1/4 inch spigot when the cast iron ES2 engine used a 3/8th inch spigot. The casting process was changed in 1953 to the Welworthy Alfin die-cast type which had the full iron skull. This head was subsequently used on all pushrod single OHV engines for the 1955 season. I would think you could get away with using either of these as the later one cannot use as high a compression as the early type. You will need to get a post 1954 barrel to suit or modify your old barrel to fit and use a spacer underneath. Check the thread on ES2 pistons recently on this blog for more info. Regards, Richard.

Thank you for the follow-up. Richard post confirms my impression that pre 1950 alloy heads have been produced.
What a co-incidence that an alloy engine is for sale on ebay... will give it a chance !
Thank you again.
Great forum!

Werner,
Roy Bacon's Norton Singles book lists ES2 alloy heads as from 1953 on.
