Primary chain length

I have a '55 ES2 with a 20T drive sprocket (standard), a 42T clutch sprocket (standard) and a 76 link primary chain (standard?) yet the gear box is as far forward as it will go and the chain is still taught. I'm about to fit an extra half link which will give another 1/2" on the chain making 1/4" on the top and bottom runs so enable the gear box to go back 1/4" for more adjustment.But should I have to do this with a standard set-up?BTW the gear box is from a Model 77. Does that make any difference ?

I note that the later 1959 ES2 only has a 75 link primary chain. This suggests to me that your Model 77 gearbox mountings may be different.

I would be tempted to file the plate slots to obtain more movement of the box.

Question.......the first Model 77 (500cc) had the Laydown gearbox but the second, later (600cc) version should have an AMC box. Which do you have?

Thanks John. I'll check that out.Thanks Phil. I have the first one. Looks the same as a laydown ES2 box.The prob with filing out the slots is that I'll have to remove the gearbox which does not seem to want to move too freely.There is at least one other club member who has the same set up as me so the boxes are reasonably interchangeabe.

My 1930 ES-2 had the same problem. The half link is necessary. Without it and using an extra link, the chain was too loose and the wheel was at the far end of adjustment in the frame. Take one full length out and the chain had no free movement at all when the joining link was connected.
