How can I find instructions on how to remove a K2F Magneto from a 65 atlas?

Hi Jim, 

Manuals are available as downloadable files, or even can actually still be bought as proper books. With a Dommi or Atlas, a manual is a worthwhile investment. 

Seriously though, I expect someone will soon add the procedure on here for you.

If you are refitting the mag later, get a BSA A10 extended mag sleeve nut for the lower fixing as it will make life much easier.

Once you have removed the timing cover  and released the sprocket  ( check the instructions for this !)  it should be fairly obvious .  Watch out for a loose nut  inside the timing case.

Earlier bikes had a nut on the magneto side of the bottom stud. Later  as Robert says, the nut was inside the timing case. Mine on the back was so inaccessible that I ground the sides off an open ended spanner and turned it bit by bit....Will a 1/4" or 3/8" drive socket on extension fit? I suspect I only had a big 1/2" drive one when I last did it.

Timing cover must come off because the sprocket inside has to come off with its chain before you can pull the mag clear. Sounds like you need a better manual...

On a '65 Atlas the bottom (pivoting) part of the mag should be secured with a bolt. The head f the bolt is in the timing case. You probably have to pull the advance unit and sprocket to get to it - I can't remember. The earlier bikes have the nearly inaccessible nut behind and towards the bottom of the timing case.

It looks like the timing cover need to come off.

 

Could someone recommend a good manual? Either downloadable or printed?

Jim...I just did a search for the ones I have...and all are now out of print. I see a copy of the F Neill one on Amazon at £17.50 soft cover and £90 hardback! I suggest you jump in quick before someone else sees this.

It looks like the Club needs to go into publishing. Some were being sold by Andover Norton. Maybe try the others...  RGM or Norvil? Good luck!

(EDIT: It looks like RGM have the Haynes, and maybe more)

The attached photo shows an earlier motor than yours. If you look just above where the timing chain exits from behind the bottom of the auto advance unit you can see the base of the stud that locates the bottom of the mag on this earlier motor. On your motor there should be the head of a bolt in this same location. Of course there are also 2 waisted studs and nuts visible on the rear of the timing cover that locate the top of the mag.

The Heavyweight twins in 1965 had three magneto waisted fixing studs with part number T2245 that screwed into the crankcases.  The nuts were reduced hex 5/16 inch BSC (26 tpi).  In 66 some of the bikes (up to a certain engine number) retained these three studs but then they swapped the bottom fixing stud to a thin- headed shouldered bolt with fibre sealing washer, steel washers and 1/4 inch BSC nut.  The head of the bolt as already stated is inside the timing cover behind the bottom run of the magneto (or points rotor) drive chain.  The shouldered bolt has part number  25105.  Good luck, howard.
