Kick start issues

Forums

Every so often I read warnings about catastrophic problems if the (a?) lay shaft bearing is on its way out. Kick start lever misbehaving... but which bearing in this? Is it the one deep inside the box (how does that affect the kick-start?)  or is it the bush inside the kick-start outer shaft? And does it affect all boxes from Doll's head to AMC? And what are the early symptoms? If it's an outer bush, I imagine only the outer cover needs to come off to inspect? (for Doll's head...both covers for later boxes?)

Hi David.  The usual culprit on the AMC box is the ball  bearing  in the drive side . If the bush is worn in the inner cover  it can also make the Ks move back , particularly on the earlier boxes where the KS spring  locates in a hole ,and the spring is a weaker design.  BOB.

Thanks  Bob.  It's the dolls head - kickstart is reluctant to stay upright.  The inner bearings looked OK last year when I had it all apart.  The kickstart spring was a horrible thing to get in place - I hope it's only that not being strong enough.  I might take it apart (just for fun in these benighted times) and have a better look.  And perhaps slow down the oil leaks at the same time!
