Atlas clutch adjusment hole in primary chaincase

Forums

I have just started the restoration af a 1966 Atlas and I'm compiling a list of the parts I need when the autojumbles & shows start again. The access hole in the primary chaincase for clutch adjustment is not circular as all the parts book and pictures I can find seem to show, it's oval. My problem is that the plate or grommet needed to cover the hole is missing and I can't find the part number to order one. I believe the hole is original, not enlarged, as the clip which holds its cover in place is the correct size for the hole. Any ideas?

Thanks, Paul.

Didn't know that the Atlas has this hole, blooming good idea was thinking of cutting a hole/slot in my Dommie one. Got a photo? Have you tried ebay for a proprietary grommet?

I think there is a few anomalies here. The large hole in the rear of the chain case is oval and should be 'sealed' by two plates riveted/spot welded in place and with a felt washer gearbox main shaft passes through. There is an oil filling hole middle top in the cover with a separate plate which has a clip. While the later introduced clutch adjustment hole should be circular, no clip and needs a blanking rubber grommet.

From Pauls description it sounds like someone has attempted to replicate the chain inspection/oil entry  detail  to allow access to the clutch center adjuster . The standard grommet detail can be a leak and get displaced by a boot contact . The grommet was introduced  in the 1960's , but in my mind is not needed if the clutch is properly set up in the first place. A grommet to allow the use of a strobe on the alternator rotor is definately on my list. Give us a photo Paul if you can.

As usual in these matters a photograph helps.

The attachment shows the 1965-on Primary Cases.

Borrowed this unused pic from Ch 27  of the DSNs  Al.

Hi Paul, it looks as if the original large hole for a grommet has been extended by a second smaller hole in line with the clutch spring screws, then cut out between to form a single hole. It certainly isn’t standard and I doubling you will get a grommet. If it had been made to suit a grommet it wouldn’t have had the retaining strap fitted.

I would have been better to put a smaller second hole, large enough for a screwdriver, then use 2 different grommets. Whoever did it hadn’t realised that it would be difficult to check the clutch outer plate was lifting squarely.

Regards

Dick

Why not get it tig welded to the correct grommet size? Adding a section in to get it back to original shouldn’t be difficult.
