1932

Here we go, this should be fun. I already own an 54 big 4 which runs great. Also I live in the colonies here in Minnesota. I am looking at purchasing a 1932 ES2 at the US price of $3000.00. The bike is all original bike and untouched since the pilgrims rolled it off the ship. It does seem to be very complete on the outside minus one foot peg. The problem in internal. Checking it over the engine does turn over but the complete clutch has gone on holiday and not come back. My question is, any ideas on what it would cost to replace the clutch? Also what are your thoughts the purchase price. I am 72 and looking at a project for the future.

Also, how available are any motor, transmission or other parts for this?

Thank you in advance for any help and words of encouragement. I have had wonderful helpful replies in the past on my big 4 from this group. Unlike some replies on other groups where there is no knowledge or help.

Thank you again

I'd talk to Andover Norton.  They seem to do complete clutches for the earlier models - see their web site.  The big change to the clutch was in the late 1950's.  The snag is that in 1932 they still had the Sturmey Archer gearbox - which preceded the doll's head and eventually developed all the way up to the Commando - you probably know this - but I hope some expert here will be able to tell you if you have the correct gearbox shaft.  Lots of things developed and although there is some interchange possible, offsets etc altered. The clutch was completely redesigned in 1934, and the later clutch is the type you are most likely to find.

Do you know what gearbox it has?  An original Sturmey Archer is correct, but it might be much more difficult to find the right clutch unless they can be interchanged.  Someone here will know...

.. I'd snap it up. Clutch parts are reasonably easy to come by but as David says compatibility may be an issue. If you're not too bothered about absolute nut-and-bolt originality I'm sure you can get it up and running.

I'm not sure that Andover Norton would be my first port of call - RGM also do some early stuff, and of course Russells Motors still have bits and bobs although I believe they don't do email etc.

Sounds like a great project.

Found more info. $3500.00 us  and I believe a 1935 frame(number 62063) motor 37?( w79733) speedo  number(S440/1/l ) not sure if correct.

Any more thoughts on me buying it? Motor turns over but complete clutch missing.

Thanks I hope I was able to post photos.

Seem things have changed a bit - perhaps one of the Pilgrims had 37 motor lying about - now the question is are you sure it is an ES 2 and not a Model 50 ?

Any engine number prefixed 'W' is likely to have at least the crankcases from a WD16H.
