ES2 Clutch

Forums

I found it hard to select neutral today so I adjusted the clutch to take out the free play.  On pulling the lever after adjustment, I could not pull the lever all the way back to the bar.  Does this mean I have run out of friction material?

On my ride, there were so many tourists who panicked when anything came the other way on our narrow roads yet left a massive gap on the inside that I could have ridden through if I had been in a reckless frame of mind.  I suppose I should be grateful for the money the bring to the local economy.

Hi Chris, if the clutch ain’t slipping don’t worry! As for drivers not knowing how wide their cars are .... don’t get me started! In the winter two cars can pass easily in opposite directions in our lane, for some reason in the summer passing a car coming in the opposing direction suddenly requires a gateway or passing place!

Now then you two, just be grateful for the money they bring and the entertainment when they try to reverse.  You must understand that they're frightened of getting soil stains on their Chelsea tractor tyres.

Chris, I'll speak to you later.

If it is the Laydown box maybe the operating arm is running out of travel? Check by removing the oval cover and observe while pulling the clutch lever. If that is the case screw the cable adjuster back in (creating lots of free play again) then slacken the pinch bolt on the operating arm. Using a screwdriver in the slotted end of the worm spindle turn clockwise until you feel resistance from the pushrod. Hold it in that position and push down on the operating arm until you have taken out most of the slack in the cable. Sounds easy but there's not much space in there! Re-tighten the pinch bolt, then re-adjust free play on the cable adjuster.

I have no practical experience of clutch adjustment on the AMC box.

If the clutch centre nut is coming loose (not unknown) you can end up with the clutch pressure plate contacting the inside of the primary case. There will have been several cable adjustments before you get to that point. Look out for flexing of the primary case when pulling in the clutch lever.

Thanks chaps.  Hi Dan, I went past your house yesterday but couldn't stop due to a grandkids' visit.  Dave, thanks for your 'phone call.  I did not know you watched this site either.  I think I will back off the adjustment and see now hard it is to select neutral.  If it is too hard, I will ring you to arrange a call to your place.  It is harder to get work done now that I have retired from the car garage.  The bike is a 1957 with AMC box.
