ES2 Hot starting (or not)

Check the mixture is correct, not too lean otherwise mixture too weak when hot / evaporating.Check your tappets have the correct gap as one valve could be very slightly open (especially exhaust) when hot, then she wont start. Also check the lead is not breaking down when hot...not un common.... only use copper leads with no suppressor on the plug cap.

If your 110% with all that then its a case of looking at valve seats, timing, rings etc etc. but I am willing to bet its either carb, leador tappet related.........

What did your old plug look like? Should be slight grey build up. Also is the tank clear no debris in the tap filter or lines.

Annoying but start basic and work up... my ex wife was the same she was a pig to get going when she was hot!!

I had a similar prob with my '55 ES2, Andy. After several months with my right calf muscle getting bigger by the week I found the trick. Petrol on, 1 second tickle, retard ignition, air valve closed, THROTTLE COMPLETELY CLOSED, slowly kick it just past compression, then wallop and off she goes at about 120 rpm then you catch it on the throttle and your away. Simples! BTW this was after doing all the checks that have been noted above. George

Yep as George has said above...( I wouldn't even tickle it though)...just kick the engine over with the throttle closed. What you need to be sure of though for it to work reliably is that you have the tick-over carb adjustment perfectly set with a hot engine and by that I mean it will tick-over "all day" nice and steadily. So if you think about it all the engine needs to start is to be turned over again to resume the tickover. Once it does you should be able to open the throttle for the engine to pick up normally.
