Brooklands Can dimensions

Forums

Does anyone know how far the inlet pipe should reach? Mine goex in about 6".  2" is in the entry tube, so a bit more than 4" extends inside the box. I thought if I cut it shorter, I could fit my 16H silencer for use round town. But will it make the can even louder? Maybe I should drill holes in it to make it a bit less loud for the neighbours? It's all a black art.

Hi David,

Attached are some scanned pages from a 70+ year old edition of "Tuning for Speed" showing a few dimensions of the regulation can as set out for official qualification at the Brooklands track. This is significantly different to the modern type as made by Armours. Also attached on my second post are photos of my 1980s reproduction of an original can alongside an Armours product. The early Armours had an internal sleeve with a blind end and multiple small holes in the tube of the sleeve to make a basic baffle. The later type do not have this and the front pipe goes direct into the can. Fitting a more restrictive silencer may well affect your carburation due to back pressure.

Top one for a 500?

Bottom one for a 350?

Just a thought!

Richard...thank you very much. It's a severe move but the end of the pipe is too far to the rear to allow a standard Norton silencer to fit. If I am brave enough to cut it back to the official 2", that might be enough to be able to civilise it for locsl use.

Just measured mine. Seems to be 2.25 litres..rather less than the 3 listed in your mail.
