Dolls Head oil level and leak.

Forums

I wonder if someone could tell me how to tell if you have enough oil in a dolls head gearbox.I have always filled it until oil runs out of the filling plug. Also I seem to have quite a bad leak from the lower,I believe its called quadrant plate. Its where the gear change selector rod fits onto. Any advice would be much appreciated.

With that amount of oilflailing around i'mnot surpriseditseepsout thechange quadrant bush. That's odd, Jonathan. The WD manual says to fill the four speed box up to the level of the filler. Are there different filler levels on different boxes?

I agree with you David, when you can't put any more in, that's the level and what it says in the WD maintenance book. Bet Richard P would confirm that.

Mine used to leak a bit from the sleeve bearing but not so much since replacement.

One day I will get around to changing to a grease made for such gearboxes that turns liquid when hot and solidifies when cool. That will stop the leaks when stood.

For the last 19 years I have been using Classic EP 140, mostly Castrol. (OK with yellow metal)
