I'm suffering from an extremely slack timing chain. The good book shows a lovely drawing of how easy it is to adjust the position of the magneto plate. Problem is it's totally inaccessible. As far as I can see I'll have to drain the oil tank and disconnect the flow and return oil pipes to get access to the bolts. Am I missing a trick somewhere? George

There isn't a trick it's just awkward. I managed to do it with a selection of ring spanners and 3/8 drive sockets. Seem to remember the only thing I removed was the rubber oil return pipe to give a bit more clearance.
However, if the chain is really stretched (worn) then I'd be thinking about replacing it.

OOps! I did do a check but obviously not detailed enough! I had completely forgotten that it was one of my queries a year ago. Thanks for pointing that out Richard. Your memory is obviously better than mine. I'll re-read the whole lot and start again. Sorry guys. George

HI. I ALWAYS HAD TROUBLE WITH THE CHAIN- LOOSING-TENSION ON DIFFERENT -SINGLE/ BIKES . WHICH WILL AFFECT THE TIMING -SLIGHTLY. I ALWAYS HAD GOOD OR NEW CHAINS , YOU DON'T WANT THE CHAIN TO TIGHT-AS IT WILL WRECK THE MAG-BEARING.. WHAT I DID AND IT WORKED WELL, WAS GET A WOODEN-CLOSE PEG , TAKE 1/2 THE PEG BREAK IT IN HALF [ IT WILL PROBABLY BREAK AT THE SPRING GROOVE.] KEEP THE TAPER/ WEDGE SECTION [ YOU MIGHT HAVE TO TRIM IT ]] AND TAP IT IN UNDER THE PLATFORM AT THE ENGINE SIDE OF THE PLATFORM.. IF YOU ARE LUCKY YOU WON'T HAVE TO SLACKEN THE BOLTS.. IT WON'T TAKE MUCH TAPPING KEEP CHECKING THE MAG EVERY TIME YOU GENTLY -TAP THE PEG.. IT WORKED FOR ME ,PROBABLY TO DO WITH BOLT/ PLATFORM /ETC. SLACK.. NEVER LISTEN TO ANYONE THAT TELLS YOU TO TIGHTEN UP THE CHAIN AS MUCH AS YOU CAN.. AS IT WILL S.C.R.E.W. THE BEARING.. MOST PEOPLE THAT DON'T GET TROUBLE HARDLY EVER RIDE THERE BIKES [ OOOO]] -OLD TIMERS USED TO TELL ME IT WAS A PROBLEM.. TOMMY.

Wow! That's an original one, Tommy. I can't see how it would work if the all the bolts are tight but if I can slacken them off I'll give it a go. Cheers, George
