Clutch Actuator

Forums

Do you ever wonder just “why” do we attempt to rebuild basket cases?  Yet another missing item but only just realised it on assembling the engine!  Looks like the clutch actuator was removed (a long time ago) but the circlip holding the assy in place was re-inserted (why?) - and of course the whole actuator is missing from all my boxes of bits.  Part 048195 (for later gearbox) is no longer stock in the NOC shop, Norvil list it but haven’t got it, Russell’s don’t list it (but phoning later to check if available).

Dos anyone have a “spare” at all please - can pay money or swap early Navigator heads/cams/crankshaft + money or whatever.

Failing that, could someone photograph the assy with suitable dimensions please and I’ll make one up!

I have the clubs supply of the plate (clutch thrust pad) that the balls sit in ( part number 042725) they sent me all 4 by accident which reminds me that I need to send them back!

I wonder if you could make one from the thrust pad? Unfortunately I can’t find a picture of the assembly.

Dan

Thanks Dan - waiting for that part to be delivered from the shop, not sure what I’ll get as your description sounds different to what the shop picture is (but I suppose it depends on size supplied - picture doesn’t make it very clear)!

Photos (from anyone) would be a bonus though.

Also now been through the gearbox internals, what looked initially to have been good condition is now marginal - gear parts search now started - looks like it’ll be a while longer before the Jub will be ready!

Ok we need to sort out if this is for an early or late gearbox, I assumed it’s a late gearbox which is very different from the photos above, none of the books I have have a pic of the late mechanism.

And yes Bruce the pic didn’t match the part in the NOC catalogue, I’ll take a pic of what I have when I get out into the garage later!

Cheers

This is what I ordered from the NOC shop, which is an early type actuator picture.

This is what I received!

Hi all, to help clarification Ulrich's photo and Dan's first photo are of the early clutch actuating mechanism used up until engine number 106837.  From engine number 106838 circa May 1964 the later gearbox and clutch were used which used a very different clutch actuator mechanism held in place by a large circlip using the parts shown in Dan's second photo.  A picture of the complete mechanism is attached below.   The 1964 Maintenance manual for the Jubilee and Navigator shows the gearbox, the clutch mechanism (item 39) and it's retaining circlip (item 40) which I have copied and attached.    I hope  that helps!    Nick

Nick I think we are on the same page, my first pic from the NOC  quotes the right part number for the late gearbox but has the wrong picture as you point out. I hoped it was just the picture that was wrong when I ordered, but sadly the part stored against it by the club was also wrong it was the back plate!  Let’s see what Bruce’s purchase shows up!

Thanks all - sorry Ulrich & Phillip but mine is the later type.  Dan & Nicholas, that helps enormously thanks - Dan your second pic would be what I expected but I’ll wait for whatever gets delivered - I may be coming back to you for one (please)! Nicholas, the “arm” part which nobody seems to have (and I know I just missed out on one from eb recently) - problem is not insurmountable (I’ve been a tin basher by trade before).

Current issue is first gear/kick start pinion - see photo - not available (yet), looks from the damage there’s been a previous problem (ally housing & bush) that needs fettling, other bits I can find (already ordered) or repair!

Hi Bruce,

I’m sure you could make one out of the two plates I have, I was intending to return them to the club, but I’m sure we can short circuit that! Have you tried Russel motors for the pinion and bush? They found me a selector.

Hi Bruce, that KS pinion looks ln the same state  as a friends one that I fixed on a Dommy.  Problem caused by the pawl being fitted upside down. My  bike started to act up and when checked I found the same mistake. OOPS!!.

Hi Bruce,

I've taken my eye off the ball again - and the forum seems to have gone berserk on this topic.

Can we reign it back in, please?

You are looking for the clutch lifter for which engine? Sorry, there have been so many posts that I may have overlooked it. But I get the impression from the Gearbox shot you supplied its for an 'early' gearbox and the part number you want is 041281, of which the club has tons in stock - both used & unused.

Sadly, in the club spares, they have put an INCORRECT picture against the 'late' gearbox clutch lifter - the part number is right 048195 - but the picture is wrong! This part is made up of two plates connected by a sprung rod that has 3 x 5/16" ball bearings trapped within it. - Showing none in stock.

By early or late - I mean that 'late' indicates engines after 106838 and all Electra.

Hi Andy, thanks - as one of my replies, it’s for the later engine/gearbox.  I couldn’t find  any photos or diagrams of the later actuator anywhere and mine is completely missing so hence the post!  The clubs part photo for one part was completely misleading as to what it looks like and the assy wasn’t/isn’t available anywhere it seems - hence the responses from other very helpfull members (including you) who have now given me an idea of what the actuator consists of.  The parts manual is very vague on that!

Hi Bruce - I'm in the middle of moving and all my stock is in lock-ups. I attached a picture from the parts manual in an earlier post - but the NOC sent you an incorrect & incomplete set of parts. You got two baseplates, where one of your plates should have had the clutch cable lever attachment point. In addition, there are 3 ball bearinds used (3/8" diameter) and the push rod with spring connecting it all together - which is why it was called an 'assembly' in the spares list.

Here are a few pictures of the 'assembly' for your reference
