Crankshaft bearing

Forums

Could anyone help me. I am looking for crankshaft bearings for a 1939 Norton 16h. The ones that I have removed are all three the same.  LR8. But I’ve Had a look on the net and I’ve come up with two roller bearings and one ball bearing. The rollers bearings that I’ve remove are double self aliening  type. And all three the same. If anyone can help me sort the correct items that would be great and possibly where to get them.

many regards

I presume you have checked that they are the correct type?. Not unusual for someone to fit what they could get at a cheaper price, or what they had in stock. . Self aligning bearings are expensive and not common in that application.  My Dommy would run happily  on  2 ballraces, or I ball and One roller or 2 rollers.

I understand that these were fitted as standard for a while. My 1938 ES2 had them. Apparently this arrangement was not a success and the bearings reverted to one ball race and two rollers.

I was talking to Les at Russell motors and he told me that he had the self aligning type but didn't want to recommend them.

Interesting.  I wonder why they specified them. I have used them in OHC motors  in cam drives ,and I think they were used in some big Ducati motors .

Hi Guys, many thanks for your opinions on this. I suppose I’ll have to

make contact with the bearing suppliers and find out what’s the roller and ball race part numbers and prices.  many regards

It may have been because at that time they were having problems with the accuracy of finished crankshafts and self aligning bearings were there to cope with the issues. I would get the crank checked by a competent engineer.
