Removing valve springs from the inter looks easy with this tool, but where do you get one from. I have never seen one for sale. Without one the job can be a bit messy!

Valve spring compressor for cammys
I think I will take a copy from the Norton book along to my local blacksmith, he would be much cheaper. I am wondering whether the springs can be removed and replaced by hand without a compressor just like on a late Matchless. I shall soon know!
Thanks

Hairpin spring tongs.
Hi Robert,
Dan Carpenter gets these made and they are for sale on ebay at £90, so it will depend on how many times you will use it to warrant the price. You could try 2 flat plates suitable drilled and a nut and bolt. Of course, no good if you have coil springs.

Richards solution...
... is far easier than controlling the tongs unless you are a dentist. With the plates and bolt system you have very specific control of the ends of the spring and can pull them with a loop of wire through the coil when the tension is optimal.
How often are you intending to change the springs and under what conditions would determine your choice.
Cheers
Jon

Hi. If you look back a while to the topic Norton Inter Valve Springs, you should find what you want.
