Thank you for your reply..
The bike i was looking at is listed as an 1936 500 H18 and wondered what the H prefix stood for, Home market non Export? https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1071741

For a 1936 M18 solo I would…
For a 1936 M18 solo I would think up to £13k ish.. over 20 is pretty enthusiastic. I'd also question its provenance carefully. Doesn't look quite right to me., engine looks later than 36 but there are many on this forum more knowledgeable than me..

1936 18H ???
Hi Mark,
Firstly welcome on board, you can't go wrong at 40p per week subscription !
Norton never used 18H as a designation in the 1930s, the 500cc side-valve model was the 16H and the 500cc overhead-valve was the Model 18.
This bike looks to be a 1938 Model 18 which is identified by the enclosed valve engine and the left hand side front brake. The other option is that it is a 1936 16H that has been fitted with a later OHV engine. This would also need the OHV type petrol tank, but I see there are a couple of other non original parts fitted so it might have had a few changes over the years. I notice there is no speedo fitted, which will be expensive on top of the grossly over-priced amount the vendor is asking. This is more than double the outfit's real worth plus there is the cost of getting the machine home if you are in the UK. Just to put the price in perspective, you can buy 2 pre-war saloon cars or 3 post-war bikes for the same price !
The best bet might be to bide your time until something else comes along as I think you will lose a great deal of money if you were to pay anywhere near this sort of price. Just post again if you find a sensibly priced machine and one of us can point you in the right direction.

Thanks richard... Yes…
Thanks richard...
Yes the price was or is way over compared to other bikes around... I was just looking and trying to find what the 18H was or if it was a mistake by the vendor or an obscure model
Another bike i came across and looks to like it is being sold by the same vendor is another 18H this time Very Ratty and really Wrong.. https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C1089612

That one's way overpriced as well..
There do seem to be a lot odf sellers in Spain asking daft prices for bikes (not just Nortons). Where are you based?

how about going to some NOC…
how about going to some NOC meet ups where you can see, sit on, possibly ride some different models etc, as there is a lot of background info it would be wise to get to know before getting anywhere near shelling out money? cheers, and welcome. it is a fascinating marque ! Jan.

"H" models
Correct me if I am wrong but I think I remember that the "H" meant that the bike was built for the home market, not export???

That only applies
to the 16H (there was a 16C for Colonial as well if I remember correctly). The model 18 and others never had the suffix.

There was a Model 17C for us…
There was a Model 17C for us in the colonies in the 1920's.
It was a 16H engine fitted in a Big 4 frame for greater ground clearance.

The attached catalogue may be a good starting point.
