ES2 Headlamp size ?

Forums

Can anyone tell me the model year in which Norton reduced the headlamp size from 8" to 7" on the ES2  ?

I wonder why they did that ?

Nobody has come back on this yet. But in 1937 the 16H had 8" headlight. WD had smaller. So it was after the War. Now for someone with immediate post war bikes to report which year? Model 7 Dommie had 8" in 1949.

David , during my research before rebuilding my 1948 es2, I ascertained that the 1947 and 1948 and the 1949 models were originally fitted with 8 inch headlight shell. So for my money, 1950 model year is when they changed to 7 inch.

Thanks for those responses. My April 1951 registered ES2 has the 7" headlight and I wondered if it was correct. It seems that it probably was.

The Brightsparks Magnetos website includes a 'Library' of Lucas catalogues etc. Page A25 shows that for 1945-'46, the 6" MU42 was fitted, a 7 1/2" MU142 from 1947-'48, and the 6" MU42 again for most of 1949, changing later in the year to the 7" SS700P

It was probably just a case of modernising the looks but BSA and Enfield changed around the same time...maybe the MU series was even discontinued as a new fitment by Lucas ?

This message board doesn't let me post links unfortunately, or I would - but it's easy enough to find.
