Hi , model 50 1958 single down tube . gave it a run not performing as you would expect couldn't work it out. no misfires no noises couldn't hear a thing only on inspection it appears i am sitting on the chain when i sit on the bike the chain comes into contact with the chain guard . the chain is tight, well too tight i will adjust it. i had the same thing on my 19s cafe racer so i just cut down and converted a bantam chain guard to fit . this one doesn't seem as though it is deep enough at the front are they all the same. Baz
sorry about one of the image sizes couldnt delete it

It occurred to me that if a larger gearbox sprocket had been fitted than Norton's normal 19t then it might cause clearance problems but that doesn't seem to be the case here.
I thought that the AMC box had become standard across the range during 1956. I'm trying to think if that altered the height of the mainshaft.

Just a thought but the witness mark on the inside of the chainguard does not extend to the drive end of the guard which would lead me to think that its caused by chain whip rather than alignment of the drive?

Hi ,Jonathan the marks do go right along to the gearbox end. like i say the chain is too tight more or less rigid i don't think its whipping around well as far as i can tell .i am going to replace the guard with a featherbed one and press the indent in it, looks a lot deeper type. i think like Richard says it should have an AMC type box in it so it could be that upsetting things . Baz
tried altering photo so as to see the marks

I don't think you have the correct chain guard...My '53 one (same single tube SA frame) looks like this.....your one turns up at the end...This would simply explain why your chain is rubbing.:
PS... In the NOC shop it shows one identical to yours and it is for one of the LIGHTWEIGHT models...Better do some searching should be easy enough to find the correct one.

Hi Les. Thanks for the photo. ive looked at the one in the noc shop if its deep enough one of those would be ok. looking closely at this guard i have it looks as though its been cut down it has uneven edges to it.

Just to be certain Baz...the NOC ones aren't the ones you need.
Here is a factory brochure picture I've found for you and you will see the same chain guard as I've already shown you: You will find one so don't buy something to modify...
However in the interim....you can carry on using your existing one....all you have to do is drill the centre fixing hole about 3/4" lower (through both sides and it will raise it the same amount ...should be OK then...If it then rubs at the front you can remove this top section by cutting a slot backwards...shouldn't need more than an inch or so....

Hi Les thanks for the brochure picture i see what you mean. as you say i will refit the original one for now there is enough metal to lower the rear mounting hole to raise it up and then cut some from the front. i will still look out for the one that you are showing me though. thanks again Baz
