about a long ride out with everything working properly. switched on the lights [in motion] and the ammeter started going all over the place.. looking at it this morning the 15 amp fuse is still intact and not breached, but the plastic fuse holder has melted. indicators and horn are working as is the brake light. but headlight and tail light are not.

i previously typed all this out ,pressed save and it all disappeared

Last time this happened to me it turned out I had trapped a wire in a mudguard stay bolt! Have you changed something - even something apparently irrelevant? If it did work before, then some end connection has fallen off or frayed through. Or you've done what I did...

... put a fuse on the earth battery connection as well as the live side although I accept this is deprecated by some as it adds another connection. It does protect all the earth wires if you accidentally earth the live battery connection (which is why I started doing it)....
