Featherbed Frame Headstock screws

The De Luxe models had a metal trimming plate around the headstock, held on using these screws.  When the De Luxe withered away, some standard bikes in about 1963 gained this fairing also.  My 88SS has the plate.  It's entirely guesswork, but maybe the works manager found it a convenient way to get rid of bits of metal that would otherwise only have gone to scrap.

I keep it because it arrived with the bike.  But it has two drawbacks:

1) it makes it impossible to properly inspect the headstock connections

2) it leaves even less gap than normal to pass cables between the tank and the headstock.

If you wander round a collection of Dommies, you will find a small proportion have this fairing.  None of the bikes in the National Museum has it.

My bike is a 1961 Model 50 and it has the sheet metal trim piece on the headstock also.

Doesn't seem to have much or any function at all other than to clean up the headstock appearance.
