Hello, just wondering, how and where does the oil drain off to from inside of the push rod tubes.

I have an ES2 currently party dismantled and it would seem that any oil in the tubes runs down into the timing chest. The question then is - how does it get from there to the sump? George

Hello George . i have a photo of my engine with the tubes off and i remember cleaning the small hole out at the base of the tubes at the time thinking that is where the oil drains off but looking at the photo that would be covered by the rubber seal at the base. i remember oiling the followers and the oil stayed around where the ball sits. just wonder if it passes the followers somehow not important just got me thinking as i haven't delved that far with the engine, Baz

I've had to remove the timing cover to attempt to fit a new inlet camshaft bush (see separate thread) and it's evident that any oil running down the i/s of the pushrod covers will pass over the tappets, over the cams and into the timing chest itself. Not sure from then on! George

i just wondered how it passed into the timming chest but if you can see where it does George that solves that but what keeps the oil level in the timming chest to stop it from over filling . Baz

Right. Had a look today at the inner half of the timing case behind which is the flywheel etc. There appear to be two holes let into the case one at the front and one at the back, both about 1/3 up which would allow oil to fill the timing case up to about the level of the top of the oil pump. This would keep the timing gears lubricated. The oil would then overflow into the crankcase through the two holes. At least that's what it looks like. Not sure what effect the piston flying up and down would have. Does this help? George
