I replaced the inserts of my '56 19S using a vice and suitable size packers to ensure the force was evenly spread over each insert. That also helped to get them all bedded to the same depth. I seem to recall that a few crumbs of friction material came off the edges of the inserts as they were pushed into the apertures in the basket, but they remained a snug fit and didn't rattle around like the originals by that time. My inserts (possibly NOS) were sourced from an eBay supplier who didn't offer a choice of thickness.
