Dominator 99 Wet Sumping

Forums

Afternoon all, I have a 1959 99 600cc with no modifications to standard.. Due to  period of ill health and other demands the bike has been standing for about 3 months since last used.  A full oil tank (to marked level) has now become one which is a quarter full. In terms of starting with the oil in sump I was wondering what is best to do before attempting anything as obviously don't want to do any damage and pretty new to Nortons. I have fitted the magnetic sump plug with the simple centre drain device if that's the way to go. Any advice appreciated. Hugh

A couple of years ago, I saw a dommie first start after years of rest. It blew the oil seal on engine shaft. Filled primary with oil. I think you should drain the sump. If oil is not contaminated, I might think of use it again. But that is up yo you.

My 1962 Domi wet sumps too if it's left standing for a while, (just like every other Domi). Mine also has a magnetic sump plug with a small central drain plug. All I do is drain the sump and pour the oil through a filter and refill the tank. I only do it this because the oil has only done somewhere around 1000 miles since the last change, if it was older I'd use new oil.

There are plenty of comments on wet sumping and various ingenious ideas and advice etc to prevent it. Personally I just do the above as my Domi doesn't get run very often at the moment.

Drained off 2 pints or so and left a bit in sump to help circulate on start up with top up to tank as oil new. Started and running easily enough. Oil coming through and level now up to mark. Thanks for the help. Hugh
