Long Roadholder Cap Nuts Thread ID

Hello All

I have a '57 ES2 and just changed the fork oil, when I removed the top cap nuts that thread into the stanctions one of the caps was quite tight, closer examination revealed some galling/damage to the stanchion internal thread.

My question is can this be 'chased' & cleaned up? Obviously a large diameter, do taps come that large? What size thread would it be? Your recommendations please (besides replacing the stanchion!)

Many Thanks

What I do on these large threads is to get a smaller tap with the same TPI, it will likely be 20 TPI or 26 TPI, so a smaller BSF one of the right TPI (1/4 BSF is 26, 3/8 is 20 TPI) and then I insert it and press it to one side with my fingers and twist it round to reform the threads on the ID. Failing that I get some mild steel bar and thread it on a lathe and then file 4 or 5 grooves to form a rough one use only tap.
