88 Engine Number

I recently acquired an 88 engine which I identified as a 1954 with the number J122. However there is another number stamped on the rear of the crankcase mouth 'T13770'. Can anyone help with telling me what his number signifies.

Hello Now the T13770 was the shop number and can tell you where it was sent to So try asking Dave Catton he can tell you more, yours Anna J

Thank you Anna. I'm discovering there'e more to this engine than I first thought. On starting the strip the first thing is that it has an Alloy head and twin Monobloc carbs.

David, since this engine has obviously been modified (and "improved?). The only thing you can be sure of is, that you have a ?54 crankcase.

Hello Alloy heads were availablein 1954 but optionalonly and my one is the same but had two 276s left and right-handed, and sounds like a ManxNorton when running or reving should I say and fitted with higher compressionpistons 8.5.1 and a Manxman 650 camshaft and is has a semi-close ratio cluster in the gearbox that was for a Norton International , and my bike was raced at some time in its lifespan as I bought as a cafe racer, now back as near standard as can be, Dave Catton told me this 1954 Norton Dominator model 88 I own was an export bike and came back to the UKin 1989, where it was registered In Neath Scotland and I bought it in wales, so it had a right old journey in its time, the right cabs for these are 276at 1ak you can now buy them new and you need new or very good order carbs for good running, yours anna j
