Hi guys - if I fit a sealed main shaft bearing does that mean I can do away with the sealing washer between the gear and the bearing? I was thinking of removing this sealing washer and also removing the inner seal on the bearing (for lubrication) but with the washer removed surely something must be added to take up the clearance? Maybe remove the inners seal but keep the sealing washer? Any views? George

I know that my box is an upright type but the drive side setup is the same.
I went through the same thought process as you. I left the inner shim in place as it was not a tight fit against the bearing and oil could get in and just as importantly out of the bearing. I carefully removed the inner bearing rubber seal with a small pick. I don't think that this is a new modification, in fact it was Les at Russell motors that suggested it to me.
I kept the outer steel shim as I figured that it would help protect the outer bearing seal.
The bike has done a couple of thousand miles since with no leaks.
I hope this helps.
