Hi, I'm restoring an 850 mkIII and the frame, tank etc etc need painting in standard colours. Can anyone recommend someone in south UK, preferably within 90 minutes drive of London?

Thanks

Try Ace Classics in St Mildred Road in South London the Triumph dealers as their painter is amazing. They have just completed my P11A Ranger 750 petrol tank and it is perfect. They are also doing my other petrol tanks and oil tanks. Ask for Cliff.

CT Motorcycles in Kent. Chris has painted a couple of my classics and he has some Commando work on his Facebook page. Very good quality work,

Hi,

Just a quick question how much is a Petrol Tank refurbish ment respray these days?

Hi, John.

As I reported in a recent article in Roadholder I had cleaned out my slimline tank due to the lining failing and relined it. In spite of my precautions the outer paint was damaged so I had this removed by a local shot blaster (Pennine Powder Coatings in Todmorden, West Yorkshire) and he had a contact in Rochdale who resprayed it for me. Powder coating was not done in case it damaged the newly lined interior. The blasting and spraying cost a total of £160, including an ethanol resistant lacquer, and a very nice job was done, which I'm really pleased with. Depending on your location this might or might not be a possible service supplier for you but at least it might give you an idea of what it could cost. I've seen other prices, of admittedly very nice paint jobs, which were much more than this, but my simple silver finish at this price suited me just fine.

Thanks Lance that gives me a Marker for price reference.

If you see my Manx tank dimensions Message post, you can see what I was quoted for a top-quality spray job in India!

Cheers

A superb painter is in Blackpool , near the airport

Not exactly next to Stockport but then again where I live in Merseyside isn't either.

Steve at Esoteric paintwork. 07949 084 542.

He's done several jobs for me and I've been very happy with the quality and price of all of them. Not so long back he did my Roadster tank and panels, and an Interstate tank.

You wouldn't be dissapointed.

My wife got back from visting her sister last night, she lives on Highfield Road which is off Lythem Road where Esoteric painters are based.

If I had known that last week when she went I could stuck some of my Jubilee tinware in the boot for pricing up.

Next time she goes to Blackpool I will go with her. I will give Esoteric a call first.

Do they have a shop/works.

Thanks

John.

Yes John the paint shop is above a small garage business.

The good thing with Steve is that he does what the customer wants, not his own interpretation.

If you want stencils instead of stickers , that's what you get etc etc. As usual with painters tell him you need the stuff as soon as possible .

He did my Roadster tank in Harley Davidson Concorde purple, a really stunning job, not to everyone's taste, but it is to me.

I'm in the process of restoring a 1975 MK3 Interstate which I'm converting to a Roadster. Just got my tank and side panels back from FD Motorcycles in Great Dunmow, Essex and I'm stunned how good they are! I would definately recommend them, not only for paint, but spares too.

Yes, I agree about FD Motorcycles. I have a T160 that was painted by them , a stunning job.

Your Roadster paint looks great

Steven,

That paintwork looks really good. What was the pricing like? I plan to get a Mk3 Interstate tank and side panels painted in candy red/silver striping, so size and paint will make it more expensive than yours, but it would give me a rough idea of what to expect. How long did yours take?

Regards,

Andy

The tank was a new repro, but the side panels were original and needed some attention as they were dented. I was in no rush and just left them to it, so about 2 months from dropping off to collecting, cost was £450 but worth every penny.

Ouch - for a straight black on the smaller tank and side panels, means the interstate parts in a candy colour could be in the £550-600 region, if not more. seems a lot, but I have not had any wet painting done for a few years. Dream Machine did my last Interstate tank/panels in silver for £75, but that was 1984, booked vthrough Slocombes of Neasden, so that dates the job a bit too!

I also agree with the quality of FD motorcycles work. His paintwork is superb but the main thing is he uses film to mask the lines and writing so you can barely feel it through the lacquer. Following his example I do my own stuff that way now but it takes a lot of time. I'm assuming of course he still does it that way. By the way straight black is not that easy to get perfect. It shows every blemish or contamination if not right.

Yep, all the lines and lettering are done by hand. They also fitted the new fuel cap, and welded a small 'stop' on it to prevent it opening too far and hitting the new paintwork. Black paint is flawless and a mile deep!

Just a quick note - Don't forget that there's the

NOC Suppliers & Services Directory

on this website with details of 1000's of local services like 'Paintshops in the South of England'? This very useful database has now been updated to provide the relative distances of each service supplier to your postcode.
