Having removed my Magneto I suspect my pick up ring is badly worn, I contacted Dave Lindsley, Magneto specialist, who quoted £350-£450 for an overhaul +vat+postage +extra for parts. This sounds quite expensive,
Question 1. is he that good?
Question 2. is there somewhere cheaper? or as good.
any recomendations, any experiences.
regards Pete.

Like Ian says, Tony Cooper…
Like Ian says, Tony Cooper is definitely your man. He did my Mag/Dyno, albeit for my Ariel single, about 15 monthsand the total cost was about £275 as I recall. I delivered and collected to save both time and money.
He also has the rights to most of the tooling used to make parts and most of the other mag guys buy from him.
Tony is a real old school type. No interwebbynet stuff, just a telephone.
He also tests the product for you, and it comes with a 2 year transferable guarantee, which is useful if you intend selling the bike.. If you have been to autojumbles around the country, you may have seen him. Usually earing a. orange boiler suit and a top hat. Top man and top service. Highly recommended.

I can also recommend Tony…
I can also recommend Tony Cooper: he has done two mags for me in the last couple of years, a magdyo and a K2F. I can't fault any part of the service or work. If you drop the mag in to Tony or collect the finished item you might be lucky and be shown his collection of bikes!
Dave Lindsley did a mag (K2F) for me about forty years ago when he had just started up and there was nothing wrong with that one. I guess that as Dave is semi-retired then he can pick and choose his work: hence the high price quoted.

I'm intrigued that your new Commando 961 has a magneto. That's true true retro.

Try Brightspak as their magneto overhauls are very thourgh. I have their overhauled magneto's on all my Norton twins that use magneto's and they so not have that problem with the magneto stopping because of the condenser packing up. They have a web site, andone of theirmagneto'sis on my early G15CS, and that magneto starts better than the Pazon electronic ignition on one of my other bikes.

I rewind the coils for Brightspark and I recommend ther Easycap condensers they are very good and I have fitted hundreds and never had one fail. Paul wolf 07831446958
