Dommie front wheel tight - Dust cover?

Shame on me for not reporting the cure, we need solutions, not just constant grief without a happy ending.

Steve, I got my stainless dust cover from RGM, a rare time they failed. It turns out that the dust cover was actually to the design of the Mk3 commando. Too thick.

As it happened, I had the original rusty dust cover in my box of bits from when I took my 1960 99 to bits. I tried it and problem solved. (I already knew that it was fine without the cover) Not much good rusty on a restoration so my mate made me one to original spec in stainless.

I tried turning the wrong item down to no avail!

That is all there is to it but it is sensitive to having the correct dust cover.

I too have a stainless cover. Mine is too thin, or the wrong shape and rubs the hub. Orriginal is best.

You can try it Steve, I have seen plenty about without the dust cover as an option.

Just a pain taking the wheel out and refitting on your own.

I acquired a fully refurbished 1959 model 50 last summer from a reputable dealer. I have been around long enough to know that there is no such thing as a fully reliable refurbish 60 year old bike and have been going though many issues over the last 12 mouths.  last on the list was sort out the front brake as it was next to useless.  As the dealer had put new wheel rims on and the wheel spun freely, I wasn't expecting any problems. Wheel came off easily, refurbished brake shoes where supplied from Villiers and all was good until I tried to refit wheel.  As soon as I tried to tighten the wheel spindle nut the wheel locked up.  Rechecked all was back in correct place as per photos and spares manual which it was. A quick check on the NOC forum and found the information about the dust cover.  Measured mine up and it was the wrong one.  Order new one from Andover all good now.  

The dealer must have known that there was a problem. I can only think that they must have used the pinch bolt to hold the spindle  enough to be able to tighten the spindle nut to hold it in place.  Very annoying, as they could have just left the dust cover off and the spindle would have pulled through to the bearing spacer.  

Be careful out there, and thanks to all the forum members for averting a possible disaster. 

Hi, I had the same problem on my Atlas and the problem was the outer edge of the dust cover who rubs against the hub. I just grinded of a little in a lathe and everything was ok.

I have a spare original dust cover from a dominator, however had the same problem as others when using a new stainless one from RGM which appear to be based on the commando version with thicker integral spacer.

Mine would benefit from rechromeing but is not rusty.

Did you send the incorrect one back. RGM have been fine about refunding parts that have been wrong or not fit for purpose in the past.

Mine came from RGM but I decided to machine it (Without success) otherwise I would have sent it back. RGM are good about correcting mistakes without grief. I let them know that this was a Mk3 Commando part and not for earlier front hubs.

Let's hope it doesn't happen any more.

It wasn't from RGM Mark, it was from Norvil (not the stainless one, the cheaper chromed item). I bought it ages ago, so will probably ebay it, or keep it for when I get a Commando!!Steve
