Hi,
I've seen previous posts from Neil Wyatt and Patrick Mullen detailing the same problem I have, ie when tightening the spindle nut, the wheel goes tight and does not want to turn. Like others, I have fitted a new dust cover which I suspect to be very slightly too thick, as when I remove it the wheel turns freely when the spindle nut is tightened.Has anybody got a good, possibly original, dust cover which they could measure the thickness of the centre boss for me please? Many Thanks
Shame on me for not report…

I too have a stainless cover. Mine is too thin, or the wrong shape and rubs the hub. Orriginal is best.

Thanks Neil, Unfortunately…
Thanks Neil,
Unfortunately I don't have an original! I'm wondering if opening up the centre hole to 20.6mm so that it slides over the largest diameter of the spindle might work? It would then allow the shoulder of the spindle to butt up against the bearing.

You can try it Steve, I have seen plenty about without the dust cover as an option.
Just a pain taking the wheel out and refitting on your own.

Hi, I had the same problem…
Hi, I had the same problem on my Atlas and the problem was the outer edge of the dust cover who rubs against the hub. I just grinded of a little in a lathe and everything was ok.

Hi Steve.
I have a spare original dust cover from a dominator, however had the same problem as others when using a new stainless one from RGM which appear to be based on the commando version with thicker integral spacer.
Mine would benefit from rechromeing but is not rusty.
If interested please contact me direct.

Hi All, Thanks for the rep…
Hi All,Thanks for the replies and the kind offer from Ian, however I have now ordered the correct part NM18551 from Andover Norton. I emailed them last night and they very helpfully replied today. They still supply the correct item NM18551 as well as the incorrect one I already have, and sent photos for comparison. I would have posted the photos, but they are too big (file size), and I don't know how to make them smaller!!Thanks again, Steve.

Glad you eventually got sorted out Steve. Also nice that you have written in to say solved and where the correct part came from.
Let's hope all is well...

Did you send the incorrect one back. RGM have been fine about refunding parts that have been wrong or not fit for purpose in the past.

It wasn't from RGM Mark, it was from Norvil (not the stainless one, the cheaper chromed item). I bought it ages ago, so will probably ebay it, or keep it for when I get a Commando!!Steve

Mine came from RGM but I decided to machine it (Without success) otherwise I would have sent it back. RGM are good about correcting mistakes without grief. I let them know that this was a Mk3 Commando part and not for earlier front hubs.
Let's hope it doesn't happen any more.

Hi Neil, It's not just RG…
Hi Neil,
It's not just RGM, if you type in 18551 on other websites as well, it automatically takes you to 063918, unfortunately they are not interchangeable in all cases.
Just as a footnote, the part I ordered from Andover Norton at 5.00pm on Thursday arrived first thing this morning (Sat). Excellent service and very helpful staff. I haven't fitted it yet, but it looks to be just right.
Regards, Steve

I like your style lol. I've got this part so therefore I must get the rest to go with it. Must try that excuse with the wife.

Shame on me for not reporting the cure, we need solutions, not just constant grief without a happy ending.
Steve, I got my stainless dust cover from RGM, a rare time they failed. It turns out that the dust cover was actually to the design of the Mk3 commando. Too thick.
As it happened, I had the original rusty dust cover in my box of bits from when I took my 1960 99 to bits. I tried it and problem solved. (I already knew that it was fine without the cover) Not much good rusty on a restoration so my mate made me one to original spec in stainless.
I tried turning the wrong item down to no avail!
That is all there is to it but it is sensitive to having the correct dust cover.
Hope this helps.
