Hi all,
did the dgr ride today and she was running on and off poorly. Throttle felt notchy too.
I'd switched the coils yesterday to see if any change in sooty plugs after trying pilot adjustment and adjusting tappets.
Still got sooty right plug. Left is okay ish.
So on advice try dropping the needle to lean it a little. Well firstly what is a good initial setting. I think.... It was 2 from top but not 100%. May have been 3.
Anyway, refitted it and clearly something wasn't aligned as cable snapped/throttle nobbing/retainer has come off the top of the cable, and now top of needle bent.
OK maybe I'm a cack handed ape. Still learning. Thought it was in correctly.
So need a new cable (mines not in great shape anyway so good time for a new one) - Where's the best place to get a ready made with both ends on and an adjuster? It's 32" outer and 34 inner.
Also the needle I believe I require a 389/063 (99.0498) from Andover Norton? Is this correct?
Also what position should it be on the needle slot as a good starting point?
Thanks for help
Paul

Thanks I've now ordered the parts needed.
I'll try the second slot on the needle as from research the starting position for tuning looks to be 3rd slot.
As the tank if off (again) it gives me the opportunity to refit the fuel tap with my NOS plunger thanks to Robert :)
Hopefully dropping the needle will clean up the fuelling a little and allow me to retune it. Having adjusted the pilot more lean previously, it needs more kicks to start it first thing. Hoping a little leaner running and slightly richer pilot will fix the woes. Will soon see.

Well popped into local…
Well popped into local classic bike shop in Christchurch and they gave me a cable which they said they measured but it's slack and the adjuster is shorter than mine too (hadn't noticed this in the shop) but the inner cable is actually a good 3/4 inch longer than mine!
It says it's for a type 16 throttle so not sure what I have on mine.
The old cable is about 2 3/4" bare/exposed. However this is now the second cable I've received that doesn't fit. The first clearly marked 99 dom 60 to 63 and didn't even have an adjuster!
Do you think it's worth me getting a replacement 'type 16 throttle' as I assume that utilises 3" or so of exposed cable?
Wondering if I've got some weird throttle making it difficult to find a cable.

Paul, I think you need to go…
Paul, I think you need to go back to basics
I assume you have a 389 carb, this should be stamped on the flange which bolts to the engine
The slide should also be stamped 389, a type 16 slide is for pre-Monobloc carbs (not yours)
Buy a new cable from Venhills or JJ Cables (i prefer JJ as they are more used to classic stuff)
You must specify type of carb (389 ?), whether you have an adjuster on top of the carb and what handlebars you have (standard, high, clip-on etc) Without specifying these 3 things you will end up with the wrong cable
Look on Hitchcocks Motorcycles for carb info. They have exploded view of all the 389 parts and associated part numbers. Also good tuning guide

Thanks Richard. I believe…
Thanks Richard.
I believe it's the standard 376 mono block but I'll take another look. Not sure on the throttle as its been rebuilt... Guess this is the challenge with a resto.
Been sent one labelled 99 dominator to 63 but it's about half inch too long.

The bike when built did not have an adjuster on the cable . Nor on the bar levers. When faced with these puzzles i make my own cable or alter a spare .

Not got much confidence in making a cable up. Don't fancy leaving myself stranded.
Looks like the nipples are molded?

I've looked into this…
I've looked into this further and it seems that I have a rather strange throttle twist grip and cable mash up. Most of the cables are 3 inches of bare cable but mine appears to need only 2 to 2.25.
I believe the standard twist grip is a doherty type 71 m12-2/237 so I've ordered one from the NOC shop along with a pair of grips. Hopefully this will set me straight and should I need a cable in future should make it a hullava lot easier to source - being the 3 inch bare/inner exposed cable.
I'll then try and retune it and finally get it back together and hopfully running sweeter.
