Good afternoon all
This project is coming along well apart from, I've lost the ability to select neurtral!
Loosened the clutch basket, checked the primary drive tension to no avail, removed outer gear box casing and with the aid of a screw driver all gears are there.....
Read many articles (drank beer) replaced casing no gear selection, removed and replaced casing many times (drank more beer) still no gears.
Anyone any ideas ? I like to think I'm relatively able but I'm struggling ...... I was only trying to check the operation of my new rear sets!
Anyone in the east of Essex fancy a coffee (or beer!) I'm happy for some one to come round and make me look a fool case I've missed some thing lol.
Kind regards Neil

Essex Branch
Hi Neil.
There is a wealth of support and assistance available within the very active NOC Essex Branch. The new secretary, who lives near Colchester, can be contacted by email: essexnoc@yahoo.com or 07969 741413

Maybe a silly question, but is it a linkage, or a reversed lever? could you just be looking for neutral in the wrong position?

A very very good point John thank you, I started off with reversed lever rear sets but frankly the alignment of the gear lever to foot rest was awful so swapped to linage but with just the short lever in place gear selection was a 'no go' hence took outer casing off....

Ok, so the gear pattern isn't "reversed"? i.e with a lever reversed, it would be one down, three up. But with a linkage, it would be standard Norton pattern, one up, 3 down, so it may just be that the neutral position is opposite to where you thought it may be

Could it be just a dragging clutch? . This item suffers much abuse and is rarely set up well . Commonly I find a mixture of parts from different era's , buckled plates, wrong springs ,too many plates, wrong thickness etc . if it does not spin freely then it needs work.

Gearchange rachet spring
Hello Neil,
I would look at the Gearchange rachet spring tension. It is important that this is set up so there is a small movement of the gear selector pawl between the spring. You can look on utube to see how to set the tension.
I hope this helps.

Phils foto and script could…
Phils foto and script could be used to determine that the internals ,cam plate ,selectors are working and pinpoint the issue ,probably the pawl or its neighbours in the outer cover.

Check out the photograph below. A spanner on the bolt head indicated should enable the gears to be selected. This may also work on the more central bolt head alongside. Both will move the selector plate within the box and possibly allow neutral to be found.
Naff gear selection, on these boxes, can be caused by poor assembly or broken selector springs.
The additional photograph files show the two spring to check for cracks or poor shape.
For assembly advice please refer to Mick Hemmings articles/DVD or Haynes.
