Hello. Can anyone identify this tank, what is it off, why the cut-out?. I suspect that it is an army Big 4 and the cut-out is for the removal of the spark plug. Can anyone confirm please?
WD Big 4
It is indeed WD Big 4 which being taller than the 16H but having also to fit into a WD high ground clearance frame, didn't have much room above the plug. Normally the cut-away is more or less hidden by the knee rubber.
Most of the rest is Sidecar-wheel-drive Big 4 too. Engine is unusual in that the War Office required the re-introduction of the oil tell-tale which did not appear on civilian (or early military) 1938 pattern engines.

On a picture found on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_Big_4 there seems to be a similar cut out. Another pic on https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/REL28597/?image=2 shows same cutout.
