Oil on the head...

Forums

Hi all,

Coming to the end of my '74 Interpol restoration and I now have started the bike up several times.

I noticed oil on the head fin (but above the head gasket), could the oil be coming up from the nearest head bolt (front top right hand side)? And if so what's the fix?

You can see the pool of oil in the attached photo.

Thank all - Paul.

I would be looking at the studs that screw into the block at the inner front of the bores. The threaded hole for these sometimes breaks into the pushrod tunnels. A dab of loctite or silicone sorts it out. But of course the head has to come off again....

Otherwise it may be the head gasket. On my Commandos I always used well annealed solid copper with a smear of Wellseal around the pushrod tunnels.

My Grandmother was very fond of laying the odd antimacassar around to deal with this.. Any use?

I'll get my coat...

Paul, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is a classic leak between 3&4 fin. It is most likely to be a crack which goes horizontal back into the push rod tunnel. There is not much metal in that area and its easily done when removing and torqueing the head.

You can do two things, ignore it and live with a messy head or have it welded . It's not cheap but there is a company near Portsmouth who can do it .ask Solent Branch for details

If you can get to Norman White, he will show you precisely what I mean. Good luck
