electra - regulator/ rectifier / starter solenoid

I have two questions concerning the electronics on a 1963 electra .

 there is no current coming from the post on the solenoid that feeds 

the brown wire , its to left of the yellow ignition wire attached to the 

terminal post .does that mean the solenoid is bad . the second question

is i want to change the stock regulator and rectifier to a regulator / rectifier

theres a lucas 12 volt single phase 120 wtts for sale on noc but there all

out of stock. where could i purchase one that will work on the 63 norton

will help you with the regulator I'm sure. Probably also with your solenoid.

Hello IS. First the easy problems. The alternator was originally Wipac, but a Lucas will replace the stator. You cannot replace the rotor as the crank is 1" (as opposed to 3/4") and all Lucas rotors are 3/4" inside diameter/shaft fitting. So any Lucas stator will fit and work. You will get a slightly larger rotor/stator gap but not an issue. Recommended is the RM21 or modern equivalent.

Changing the rectifier and odd Lucas regulator, mounted on the mud guard, to a regulator/rectifier is a good move, (especially as I sell them).

Now the solenoid-the Yellow wire is the one that receives live electricity from the handlebar switch (with ignition on) the solenoid should then 'clunk' as it operates. There is no earth wire as it gets earth through the body. There is one large feed terminal/cable to the starter. and another large feed cable from the battery-this will have a brown wire on it so that the battery power feeds the rest of the bike.
