SOHC Lashcaps?

Forums

Does anyone have experience using them on the valve tips of an Inter or sohc Manx?

Thanks,

Mike

What is it that you are questioning about?

Mike

p.s. I do not have a Manx or any other OHC Norton.

I am just curious as to what the question is?

Hi Michael S.,

I think the object has been lost in translation across 'the pond'. Michael R. is referring to the hardened end caps that fit on the valve stem to protect the relatively soft valve stem material. These can be used on rocker arms with the adjuster directly above the valve as this doesn't affect the strike angle of the rocker arm, so this lends itself to being suitable on Norton SOHC engines. Having said that, it is possible for the cap to get wedged on the valve stem after a high mileage has been covered.

...........for translation and an answer to my question. I was just curious as to whether they can pop off or jam or whatever. I made valves to suit my repaired head and have yet to decide to weld hard facing on the tip or use a lash cap.

Hi again.

I haven't had any problems so far but I can't claim to have covered a high mileage. As far as I'm aware, it's common practice to fit them to SOHC engines although they aren't listed in the Spares Manual. The height of the cam-box in relation to the length of the valves does have some bearing as to where the tappet (travelling in an arc) contacts the top of the valve stem i.e. ideally the tappet should be central on the stem tip when the valve is midway through its travel. In my case (as well as protecting the tip of the valve) fitting a lash-caps, effectively lengthening the valves, helped to get this adjustment right.

Cheers.

Ian.

I've had 3 Cammy N's, all fitted with caps but used for stem length improvement.  One came from George Cohen, another from Australia, and tht latest is a UK Magnesuium motor built by Stu Rogers.

.....Since my whole mess is going together for the first time, a rag-tag collection of parts, I have a lot of choices as to compression, cambox height, valve length, etc. Last thing to do after I get compression where I want it and everything shimmed and spaced correctly is to finish the valves to length and tip them. Caps sound like the easiest way  to go and so I will.

Thanks,

Mike

"Sticktion"  is the retainer of the cap when running Mike.  The good fit of the cap over the end of the valve with a film of oil on them will keep them seated...

Cheers
