Handle Bar Controls

The top RH button is an engine kill and the bottom button is for the starter if fitted,,, I've never seen a red one though.

I've got a '73 Mk1a 850 - original Lucas switch layout from factory is as follows -

Right hand switch :

Top black button not connected to anything

Middle lever up and down for indicators

Bottom red button = engine kill

Left hand switch :

Top black button = head lamp flasher

Middle lever = dip / main beam

Bottom black button = horn

Got confused there as my wiring diagram has the controls on opposite sides to what you seem to have. It makes a lot of sense to have the indicators on the right and the dip on the left, which is how I am going to have them anyway.

Also makes sense for the Kill to be the red button... The cable is White and Yellow for the kill.

The redundant starter button cable colour is White and Red.

Just noticed that RGM sell a repair kit for the switches, with all the paddles, springs, balls and buttons.

It is a "push to break" type switch so pressing it effectively turns off the ignition. Some people say they can be unreliable and bypass them to avoid problems.

The switch blocks are interchangeable side to side and in different years Norton moved them!

I had my indicator switch on the left as the right hand is usually busier with throttle and brake. But each to their own.
