I understand that this was quite common, but, I can't seem to find a post by anyone who has done it. Would there be a need to change ignition, valve timing, or carburettor settings?
I have just discovered (after 20 years!) t hat my '54 Dominator has 600 pistons. There is no excessive vibration, but too speed is well below that of the bike I owned, in the 50's, although fuel consumption is slightly better.
I'd like to do that since I have a NOS pair of 99 pistons. But my barrel is sleeved and the size would leave no room to bore. Unless 99 size sleeves would fit an 88 barrel?
Do you have too small a carburretor? Seems unlikely that settings should change because 650 SS had same carbs as 88SS. 1+1/16.
The size only goes to 535 cc if I remember correctly.
I suspect that a sleeved 88 barrel bored to take 99 pistons may finish up with very thin (weak?) sleeves, but a worn 88 barrel bored out to 68 mm is a reasonable job.I think that an unsleeved overbored 88 barrel is just as strong as an orriginal 99 barrel.
