Refusing to start!

Forums

After finding my 23-year-old Boyer Bransden stator plate was past it's best, I replaced it with a brand new one. I did my best to ensure it was in the same place as the original by referring to photos I took but she now won't start. If she does she kicks out a lot of black smoke for a couple of seconds then cuts out, or, it's a loud audible "pop" & that's it.

The list of things I've done/checked:

  • Removed plugs & kicked over a dozen times with clutch in
  • Cleaned plugs up & replaced
  • Checked HT lead connections, all okay
  • Drained Mikuni carb of fuel & checked flow from both taps, all okay
  • Drained sump of any excess oil
  • Battery has been on trickle charge so ~13v+

She's a 1974 Commando 850, single Mikuni carb, air screw is 1.5 turns out.

I will drain the fuel & replace with some new tomorrow.

What else could be amiss?

Cheers.

If it was OK before you changed the Boyer it`s probably related to that, I had a similar problem after removing mine to check the cam chain, it was the feed wires to the boyer. Try some new wires just lashed up temporary to test.

Good luck, Al.

so swapping the leads won't tell you much. I'd agree though that the first place to look is the BB system. Do you get a good spark with the plugs out? Is there a strong spark when you turn the ignition off? If so, then the BB is "probably" OK. Those tests don't rule out massively incorrect timing however so I'd be rechecking that.

I too thought that because Boyer system was wasted spark, reversed leads would make no difference - but it does. Give it a try!

Assume nothing and start the timing procedure from the start, freshly charged battery, no lights on , fresh fuel and pilot jets cleaned out with #78 drill.

Swapping HT leads will NOT alter/change anything if carbs-compression-plugs are all correct. Ie wasted spark means the timing of the spark on each cylinder is the same ie identical.

Swapping the pickup leads will cause constanation! (ie trouble) ie still crap smell checker)

Reversing the two pickup leads will lead to a fully retarded ignition. If all else is in good order and the ignition timing 'was' correct. then IF the engine starts it will be very 'flat' unresponsive, possible kick back, Could even hurt your foot!
